In a statement issued on Tuesday, the FDA said it “provides an analysis of these risks” and that the agency does not take any action to address the issue.

The warning comes after reports that Viagra, a widely used drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 80 percent. “In fact, it was reported that in a review of the safety of Viagra in women, the FDA has recommended that physicians prescribe the drug to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke and to improve sexual function,” said Dr. David A. Merkowitz, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Merkowitz added that the agency is considering a review of the safety of Viagra in men with erectile dysfunction who have a pre-existing cardiovascular condition or who use nitrates.
“If these patients do not have an existing heart condition, they should not take Viagra. These patients have an increased risk of stroke, and a higher risk of heart attack and stroke,” said Dr. John D. herself, who did not return calls or messages seeking to air her views. “In addition, these patients may be more likely to have other serious problems, such as diabetes or kidney disease, if they are taking other medications.”
